Self-help information

Interested in knowing a little more. Below are a few non-indept definitions that will help you have a general understanding domains and web hosting. This information is meant to help give the novice a general understanding of domains and web hosting.

Domain names - Domain names are used to identify particular Web pages. For example, in the URL http://www.jcisreal.com/index.html, the domain name is jcisreal.com. All domain names have a suffix that indicates which top level domain (TLD) it belongs to. There are only a limited number of such domains. Example of a few are:

com - commercial business
edu - Educational institutions
org - Organizations (nonprofit)
gov - Government agencies
mil - Military
net - Network organizations
ca - Canada

Domain names are not own my the payee but lease.

Obtaining a domain - There is only way to register and begin using a domain name which is to use the services of a domain name registrar. The domain name industry is regulated and over seen by ICANN, the organization that is responsible for certifying companies as domain name registrar's or through a domain name registrar's reseller.

IP Address - The Internet is based on IP addresses, not on domain names. A Web server requires a Domain Name System (DNS) server to translate or convert domain names into IP addresses. IP Addresses are assigned by the ISP or Web Hosting company you pay for Internet access. Generally, this process happens in the background without the users intervention needed.

DNS - Domain Name System (abbreviated DNS) is an Internet directory service. A not so complex system that direct's traffic from one point to another point on the Internet. An example would be it acts like the post office directing traffic to your web site as well as direct's e-mail to your e-mail box based on your domain name.

Whois - A web server that checks and reports on domain names for availability of domain and ownership.

Web site - A place where you domain points to through computer that run DNS.

Web Hosting - A service ran on a web server (computer) that offers to provided a place to develop a web site and point a domain at that web site.
